ABOUT THIS PROJECT
The Seed
In early 2017 there was a video making the rounds on social networks and the subject was global warming. It started off stating that Chicago had no snow in January or February which has never happened in the last 150 years. Then it mentions that Oklahoma hit 99 degrees and Denver hit 80 degrees in February of this year. This heat is causing polar ice to melt and sea levels to rise. The video closed by letting the viewer know that Miami is spending millions upon millions of dollars to build sea walls, add water pumps and raise roads. And that was it.
After making us aware of the problem, it never suggested a solution. It was scary and hopeless. However, it did have one effect. It took my cofounder and me from being on the fence about climate change to being believers. It caused us to ask, "what can anyone really do?"
We began to do some research and found out about deforestation. The loss of trees is having a major effect on global warming and more than 83 million acres have been lost to wildfires from 2005 to date. Then we read an article about how illegal logging is the biggest deforestation problem because it is nearly impossible to monitor and stop. So it made us ask, if the loss of timber was the problem, could planting trees be the answer?
WHY IT MATTERS
Each person generates approximately 2.3 tons of CO2 per year. On average, one acre of new forest can sequester about 2.5 tons of carbon annually. A single tree can absorb CO2 at a rate of 48 pounds per tree each year.
So the answer was clear. We need to plant trees, but where? Where would trees do the most good? How about the inner city?
As cities like Detroit go through major economic and demographic decline, people leave. Parts of the city are so abandoned now they have been described as looking like farmland, urban prairie, and even a complete wilderness.
Planting in these areas could help revitalize neighborhoods, bring neighbors together and increase property values. It would bring new life to crumbling areas. The community could learn about gardening, beekeeping and tending plants.
But what if there was one more thing we could do? What if we added wildflowers? Wildflowers too would help turn CO2 into oxygen. It would beautify the neighborhood and most importantly, help save our declining bee population. Bees are on the path to extinction due to climate change and habitat loss. Fruit trees and wildflowers planted on these lots could help bring back the bees.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
So that is our story, our hope and our dream. We can address Climate Change, Urban Decay and Bee Population all with simple task of planting a tree.
Plant a tree, help a community, save the world. That has become our mantra. Please join us in our fight against global warming. Join our rag tag team and help us plant #1000trees.
Together we can turn the tide on climate change!
