About Us
We are the victims of war, politics and discrimination who fled their homeland for a safer place. We are a group of people from a number of countries in Asia like Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan gathered here in Indonesia hoping to end up somewhere where we would live a normal life like everyone else. We want to live in a place that provides and respects our basic human rights; to be able to send our children to school and not worry about losing our lives. But unfortunately fleeing all these nightmares didn't make a lot of a difference for us except one thing that we are safe which is what we are truly grateful for. We are also grateful to Indonesian government for letting us stay here as refugees. It is sad that we are not allowed to work here or enroll our children to formal schools. Having all this difficulty, some people are stuck here since 2012 due to a slow process in UNHCR. It was in 2015 that we came up with an idea of establishing a school here so our children can grow up with an education. Refugee Learning Nest (the Nest) was establish in March 2015 by refugees for refugees. We established the Refugee Learning Nest which has been very successful so far because we got enormous support from many generous people from around the world and allows it to operate in times of uncertainty.
A lot of work has been done since, a huge number of refugee children have received education and many refugees call Refugee Learning Nest their school, which is a community-based and volunteer-based school. It belongs to every refugee regardless of their nationality, religion and language. None of these would have been possible without our supporter's contributions.
Our achievements
There are 130 students who are being taught daily in two shifts. We have 17 talented teachers who are volunteers and teach different subjects. We have 5 other volunteers who run the HR and manage the school. We have online courses for our teachers and students with native speaker of English. We have several Bahasa and English classes in the afternoon shift for adults which help them to become able to communicate both locally and internally. Already there have been many improvements to the school including the purchase of computers and the construction of more classrooms and a large multi-purpose hall for exams and special events.
Having the ability to provide a safe place for our students play various sports such as football, futsal and volleyball has brought us great joy and pride in our work, however none of this would have been achievable without any of this generous support from our supporters and staff.
We request you kindly to consider helping us by donating how much you can. It really means a lot to everyone here at the RLN and these people will be at least having this school running. [Maybe it is meant to 'be refugee' but it is not meant to 'not get support from lucky people']
