Hello, friends of Abre Puertas! For those of you that don't know, Abre Puertas is a non-profit organization located near Cusco, Peru which focuses on promoting literacy and education through a variety of after-school programs. Sitting in the heart of the Sacred Valley of Cusco, Coya is a disadvantaged area with a lack of economic and educational opportunities. Abre Puertas is trying to change this. We believe the way out of poverty is through education, and we focus on giving experiences to local children that they would not otherwise receive, such as extensive library access, fun and educational after-school activities, and "mobile libraries" - days where we take books into rural mountain communities that do not have much access to reading materials.
At Abre Puertas, one of our long-term goals is sustainability: we run our programs in a way that is low-cost, efficient, and with input from parents and the community. We have long hoped for a way to provide our project with a local income from a small business, so that the programs we offer aren't dependent on foreign donations. We are so excited that we have a chance to make that dream a reality this year! After much thought and analysis, we have decided to start a campsite in the area, something that will allow both locals and natives to enjoy the natural beauty of the Cusco region. The best part is, 100% of the proceeds from this campsite will go directly to support AbrePuertas!
The reason we are here on StartSomeGood is because we need fundraising help to make the campsite dream turn into a reality. With a relatively low start-up budget, and matching donations from the US non profit Friends of AbrePuertas, this is a very feasible business idea - we just need a little help from YOU!
