What we envision
We envision a world where everyone has a healthy life, the key determinant of productivity required for economic growth, subsequently leading to improved living standards.
The problems
When we look at the world, Africa stands out as the continent where healthcare access is inequitably available. In Sub-Saharan African countries, 24% of disease are concentrating on the region despite the fact that the region has only 11% of world's population. Moreover, the region has only 1% of world's healthcare spending. They have twice as much disease burden and 10 times less resources.
As Africa is source of the next population growth over the next 3 decades, improvement of healthcare access is crucial to enable greater productivity from this population through sustainably improving livelihoods.
On the other hand, global pharmaceutical companies are entering the market and want to expand customer base, but due to the lack of medical and marketing data, they have difficulty marketing and developing their products. They urgently need the platform to enables such data collection.
The opportunities
The high mobile penetration across Africa (more than 50% of the population) - particularly the high growth of smartphone usage expected over the coming years (to grow from 30% in 2016 to more than 50% of population in 2020) - presents an opportunity to leverage mobile technologies to enhance accessibility within the healthcare ecosystem.
What we are going to do
The Afya Project will develop a group drug purchasing platform that provides access to medication in a cheaper way using group purchasing mechanism. Afya means "Health" in Swahili.
Our mobile and web based system will enable the patients to purchase medicines at discounted prices through catalyzing the group purchasing mechanism and providing patient disease data with the pharmaceutical companies. It will also help pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies to maintain continuous revenues.
Change we want to focus on
The change we want to focus on is to create the mechanism in which patients can enjoy essential health care services, regardless of their socio-economic circumstances, by empowering patients communities. At the same time, we wan to make this mechanism assist stakeholders in the pharmaceutical supply chains to deepen the reach of their services, thereby enabling them to generate the sustainable profits from Africa required to incentivise healthcare investment for Africa relevant diseases.
