A Little Something is a social enterprise model centred around economic and environmental sustainability. It involves three aspects: a cooking class, a catering program and craft.
Our cooking class will offer more than just the opportunity to create delicious dishes from new settler communities. It also:
- Uses superfoods as ingredients to improve community health
- Raises awareness about the importance of a clean environment by teaching participants to effectively utilise food scraps to create compost
- Reduces effects of fast fashion by allowing the participants to repurpose old shirts into handy products, like tote bags
The new settler women also run a mini pop up stall, where they sell beautiful products, such as jewellery, that they have created using donated or recycled materials (donated by Vinnies)!
The use of recycled materials brings attention to the detrimental impact of plastics on the environment and offers an alternative option that also allows the women to help support themselves financially.
A Little Something provides a diverse range of healthy, fresh and ethnically authentic cuisines for all occasions, allowing the new settler chefs to share their food with the community whilst developing the skills and confidence in a safe environment. In addition, it provides an opportunity for vulnerable new settlers to generate income.
“A Little Something” was founded by Auburn Asian Welfare Centre and Enactus Macquarie with the mission of promoting environmentally sustainable food practices and a healthy lifestyle through cooking classes, craft workshops and Tai Chi classes. All these activities are led by women from the new settler communities (m igrants, refugees and asylum seekers), who share their knowledge about super foods, gain new skills, with an effort to improve environmental sustainability, community health and wellbeing.
In essence, it’s a humble contribution by new settler communities towards a more sustainable Australia.
