Fat Beets Food Hub is a not-for-profit enterprise which connect growers with eaters on the Tasman Peninsula through providing hyper-local veggie boxes (within 100kms by road) and organic wholefoods.
The month of November 2020 marked Fat Beets Food Hub’s, affectionally know as ‘Fat Beets’, third birthday. Fat Beets sells and distributes fresh local chemical-free produce and organic wholefoods on Saturday mornings to customers around the Tasman Peninsula. This is now a lively and bustling event which not only feeds people great fresh produce, but also allows people to connect with each other and their local growers).
Fat Beets first started in 2017 when a group of friends sought a way to distribute and sell vegetables grown at Tasman Ecovillage as well as meet the need for a local source of low-packaging, organic wholefoods. Since then it has evolved into something much more, although the aim is still the same:
To create a strong, resilient local food movement for local food sovereignty and build community, through
Connecting local food producers with customers and providing healthy and nutritious produce and wholefoods to residents of the Tasman Peninsula and
Supporting local growers of fruit and vegetables to grow organically and sell their produce in the locality.
From its humble beginnings as three friends selling produce out of a storage cupboard, Fat Beets has grown to become a community group run by a small team of dedicated volunteers. Over the years Fat Beets has been supported by local produce lovers: their wonderful customers. Fat Beets has now made connections with many local fruit and vegetable growers as well as producers of other goods from all over the Tasman Peninsula
Surprisingly, a new initiative was born out
of the recent coronavirus pandemic. In response to the hardship experienced by many, a generous customer
funded Fat Beets to supply several single parent families who are experiencing
hardship with free weekly veggie boxes. This marked the beginning of the Beets
for All Initiative, as Fat Beets realised that everyone deserves access to
fresh, delicious produce. This ‘Beets for All’ Christmas Appeal is now aiming to match the initial generous donation. This will enable Fat Beets to extend
and maybe even expand this initiative and ensure that families will be
supported over the Christmas period and beyond, when budgets are especially tight.
Please donate as part of this appeal so that we can keep this part of our work going. All of the funds raised will go to buying weekly boxes for families in need.
