Can you relate?
This was me for the past four years. I didn't know what words to say. I lived in silence because it was easier than trying to explain something I didn't understand myself.
And it is for this very reason I started to write down all of those words in my head to help me.
Hi there, I'm Stephanie Thompson - author, advocate & changemaker
Author of The Day My Vagina Broke, wife to Tom and mumma to two little people Elsie & Louis.
This book tells the story of my journey to motherhood. It tells the story of medical professionals that didn’t follow recommendations and dismissed fears and concerns. It talks openly about my traumatic birth and how the physical, emotional and psychological injuries impact my life to this day.
But it’s not a story devoid of hope. It’s a story full of courage and heart that explores ways to adjust and live with a new reality. And finally find a way to begin to heal.
I’m on a mission to start a conversation about childbirth ideology and how we view and talk about childbirth with women. it’s advocating for change to move away from a one-size-fits-many approach to how we inform mothers during the antenatal period and shift towards a model of individualised care and assessment.
Expectant parents everywhere deserve to be given unbiased, balanced and factual information that helps them to make informed decision about their birth. I want to help create an environment where the professionals support and educate expectant parents about childbirth in a realistic and loving way, with no hidden political or personal agendas.
It’s essential reading for all mothers and the professionals charged with caring for them.
I wrote it for myself, for my daughter and for all women, everywhere.
So what is Bravemumma then?
The name 'Bravemumma' came to me as I was on the plane journey home from a week at an author's academy in Bali. I knew this book was going to be a big part of my own healing journey and it was also much bigger than just my story.
When I started telling complete strangers what I was writing about, the response was met with 'that's brave of you'. I kept hearing this word brave.
My grandmother was also affectionately known as mumma. In her eyes, she was too young to be called 'grandma' or 'nanna' - so she was always our mumma. When my Elsie started talking, she too called me mumma for a long time. It was very fitting that we honor our mumma and myself as a mumma, who just learned how to be brave.
The two worlds (and words) became one = Bravemumma
I then googled what are the colours to represent brave...and came home to create Bravemumma. This platform was created to help inspire others who'd had experiences like mine to start their own journey of healing. Which is known as the 'Birth of a New Brave Era'.
