Help us end Puppy Farming
Along with the majority of the general public, Chancepixies Animal Welfare have always known that puppy farming is wrong and believe in our country of ‘animal lovers’ it should no longer be accepted.
Every year, alongside hundreds of other rescue organisations in the UK, we have helped save lives by offering shelter, treatment, rehabilitation and the second chance of a loving, long term, responsible home to abandoned and unwanted animals.
Yet rescue should not exist.
These animals should not need to go through abuse, mistreatment and abandonment before being given the chance of finding a loving forever home. Dogs like Winston should not have been abandoned, alone in a kennel, waiting for someone to give him the home
he deserves. It should have been his birth right – to live safe and loved in a family home where he was valued and adored from puppyhood to the day he passed away.
There is a solution - you can help change the future for all UK dogs.
The first challenge is to stop the unnecessary over-production of puppies in large commercial breeding establishments, often referred to as Puppy Farms. Like you, we believe dogs should not be viewed as a commodity or crop, they are companion animals who
have been evolved over generations to provide companionship and unconditional love to humans – not to be subjected to years of isolation and neglect, expected to produce litter after litter of un-socialised, non-health tested ‘crops’ of puppies, purely produced
for financial gain.
In one Welsh Council alone, between 8,718 – 17,478 puppy farmed puppies are produced each year. Produced from between 1,453 – 2,913 unfortunate dogs who are kept in a way that does not meet their basic welfare needs, and
are producing this number of puppies every year for as long as they can do so, from just 12 months old.
Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, every animal in England and Wales is given the right to have a suitable environment, to exhibit normal behaviour and to be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease. Puppy farms are in severe breach of these
laws and therefore should not be licensable.
There have been many attempts over the years to stem the trade via private prosecutions on individual farmers, but the systemic failure has not been addressed and the resulting problems continue to grow year on year.
With the realisation that it is the system that is failing these dogs, it is therefore the system that needs to be changed.
Chancepixies aims to prove that in licensing these establishments, they are allowing them to break the freedoms allowed to all animals in law. Therefore these large establishments should not be licensed and cannot legally exist.
Evidence and information has been gathered towards this campaign, and with the help of a top firm of solicitors, a case has been put together; our campaign to stop puppy farming has started and has the support of other enthusiasts, campaigners, professionals,
responsible breeders and the general public.
You can help us end this appalling trend.
To ensure our success we need to raise an initial £30,000. This will fund the necessary legal fees at this stage of our journey. Throughout this process, we will continue to raise awareness and work to educate the general public on the plight of these
dogs imprisoned by puppy farms throughout their ‘productive’ years and beyond.
Although the figure at this stage alone may appear quite high, it worth noting that between the animal welfare organisations and the Government, over £200 million every year of public money, is being spent coping with the effects of uncontrolled, irresponsible
dog breeding and ownership, and despite this huge effort, over 7,000 dogs were recorded as having needlessly lost their lives last year alone; sadly the real figure will
be far higher.
Your gift could reduce this burden by preventing tens of thousands of puppies being produced every year, and releasing their parents from a life of misery and neglect.
Your gift will ensure that a dogs’ worth is measured in years of fun and friendship - not in pounds sterling.
Once proven, these actions are likely to result in Judicial review that will change the system across England and Wales.
*To get one dog to the point of rehoming, it costs the major organisations up to £2,000 per dog. Our £30,000 target to free thousands of animals from a future of misery equates for just over 15 dogs being rehomed.
*We believe puppy farming breaks existing legislation; it is therefore an illegal trade and should not be licensed.
*The charity is unique in looking at this way to start solving the stray, abandoned and rescue dog problem in the UK
*Chancepixies has carried out a survey across England and Wales from each licensing authority (353) recording the number of CBEs (Commercial Breeding Establishments), the numbers of dogs kept, their breeds and number of litters expected. Chancepixies have
personally visited a number of these CBEs.
*Over 126,000*dogs are taken in by Local Authorities across the UK each year, 50% of these are never reclaimed, and over 7,000 of them are then destroyed by Local Authorities. Many more thousands of dogs that are not recorded are being put to sleep every
year due ultimately to irresponsible breeding and ownership.
*In one Council alone in Wales there are currently 83 licensed dog breeding establishments. 47 of these are most likely to be puppy farms (based on volume and breed/type of dog kept). Two of these establishments have 130 breeding bitches (an average of 780
puppies each a year), 1 has 103 breeding bitches (618 puppies a year), 7 have 50-100 (300 – 600 puppies each a year) and 37 have 20-50 (120 – 300 puppies each a year). That results in between 8,718 – 17,478 puppies produced on average per year in one Council
from between 1,453 – 2,913 unfortunate dogs who are kept in a way that does not meet their basic welfare needs, and are producing this number of puppies every year for as long as they can do so, from just one year old.
*Another council in England licenses one establishment for 200 breeding bitches.
*Chancepixies have employed the services of top London Solicitors in this case and are looking to stop what they believe is the illegal puppy farm trade in England and Wales.
