What Are We Doing?
“Dance Mama, Dance!” is a four-part series that seeks to promote maternal health through movement. Malketha Maternal services will work with 12-20 young mothers (aged 19-29 with one or more children aged 3-9), vulnerable women, and women in leadership positions throughout Kampala to implement mental health sensitization campaigns in an effort to promote self-care and wellbeing. Along with various other activities, the campaign will culminate in a dance performance that will allow participating mothers to showcase their talent after hours of practice.
Why Are We Doing It?
Even with all factors constant, being a mother is a job that requires a strong support network. It’s even more difficult when mothers with economic, physical or emotional challenges feel pressure to meet society’s expectations. That’s why Malketha Maternal Services is hosting an inaugural “Dance Mama, Dance!” campaign, an empowerment and wellness initiative targeting young mothers from socioeconomically disadvantaged communities.
By providing young mothers with a platform to express themselves, “Dance Mama, Dance!” will inspire a movement that encourages mothers to not only be advocates for themselves but also for mothers like them. The women who participate in this program will go on to be ambassadors of this initiative, helping mothers in their communities and beyond reach their highest potential.
Who Are We?
Malketha Maternal Services is an organization whose main objective is to provide respectful and quality mother-centered services, with a focus on maternal mental health. We prioritize the mental health of primary, secondary and tertiary caregivers of children during their early childhood development phase. At Malketha Maternal services, we believe that a wholesome mother – one who is physically, mentally and emotionally vibrant– is the most important aspect of a child’s life.
One of the goals of Malketha Maternal services is to demystify the role of mental health in maternal health and early childhood development. We aim to do this by promoting and facilitating conversations centered on maternal mental health and its ripple effect on the health, education, and economic prosperity of communities across Uganda. From the moment of conception, until well after the delivery of the baby, Malketha Maternal Services ensures that mothers are informed, prepared, and taken care of so that they in turn, can care for their children.
