WHO WE ARE AND OUR WHY
Hi, we are Zavier (10 years old) and Bailey Walker (8 years old) and we want to help the environment. We watched a David Attenborough documentary on global warming and want to make a difference. After some research, we realised what a dramatic impact plastic was having on our planet. Many animals are consuming huge quantities of plastic due to our discarded waste. This is causing a build-up in the ecosystem. Animals are getting very sick and the problem will just get bigger.
We could not understand why plastic bags were replaced with tougher, more resistant plastic bags. The ABC reported on 13thJune about a 40-year-old plastic KFC bag had been found in the water on the Sunshine Coast. This plastic bag has been in our ocean’s ecosystem for 40 years, slowly disintegrating and entering into animal’s bodies. Imagine how long a “reusable” plastic bag would take to break down?? While boating, a family member has already seen reusable plastic bags floating in our ocean
You can’t save the environment by replacing plastic with plastic. So we have started a campaign in the City of Canning to reduce the use of reusable plastic bags and have become FABRIC HEROES!!! We believe an education program, inviting children to get involved to save the planet’s animals will help influence adults' purchasing choices. We are extremely motivated and have created some amazing posters, fact sheets and helped build our website, www.fabricheroes.org. Mum and Dad (Amanda & Mark Walker), are helping us out as there is a LOT of money involved :)
WHAT WE PLAN TO DO
The biggest reasons reusable plastic bags are purchased at stores is the fact they are cheaper than the fabric bags and the shopper has usually left their bags at home. We want to install a “Fabric Bag Swap Station” at the shops around the City of Canning. Initially starting with the wonderful Riverton Fresh IGA and then expanding to other shops around the City of Canning.
Our crowd funding money will be used to create a “Swap Station” and have a good number of Fabric bags placed in it for people to use. The idea being, people can go and get a free Fabric bag, instead of buying a reusable plastic bag. Our campaign will encourage adults to “pay it forward “. If they have a spare fabric bag the next time the shop, they can replenish the “Swap Station”. We understand this system has the potential to be abused but we also believe 99% of people want to do the right thing. As with the book swap, people will embrace the “pay it forward” idea and if we get the schools within the City of Canning involved, children will encourage their parents to do so too.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
