Our Story:
The clubs began when MacKenzie and Rachael had eye-opening experiences with girls in Nepal and India. MacKenzie spoke with Kriti, a Nepalese girl who told of her parents' murder, of her forced child labor, and of her miraculous success story with the Little Sisters Fund, a non-for-profit charity that gives Nepalese girls scholarships, mentors, uniforms, health and safety information, and products for personal hygiene. Wanting to make a difference in the world, MacKenzie started a club at Seattle Academy that focuses on fundraising and raising awareness about the devastating situation in Nepal. Rachael, having undergone a similar experience, also started a club. Now, the Girls Rising and Wings clubs have joined forces. With more than twenty members, we host bakesales every other Friday, are organizing a school-wide awareness raising event, and are even creating our own logo! We all care deeply about the challenges that girls in Nepal and India face and are committed to helping them achieve the opportunities afforded by education.
Our Mission:
The goal of this project is to send two impoverished girls to school in Nepal and India. Girls are considered "inferior" in these countries and face gender descrimination everyday. While their brothers attend school and follow career paths, girls are often sold into sex trafficking, forced into child labor, or married off to old men at the age of fourteen. Deprived of an education, girls are forced to rely on men for food, housing, and money. When these girls are educated, however, they become self-reliant. Educated girls provide for themselves, choose when and whom to marry, and assure that their daughters receive an education. Educating one girl guarantees the education of her family's future generations. The Girls Taking Flight campaign gives education, self-reliance, and confidence to girls in Nepal and India.
Our Team:
A team of Seattle Academy girls joined together to help change the lives of girls in Nepal and India. We realize the privledges that we are given and want to share these opportunities with disadvantaged girls in Nepal and India. We work with the Little Sisters Fund (Nepal based) and the Kiran Anjali Project (India based), two organizations that give Nepalese and Indian girls education, mentors, health and safety knowledge, vaccinations, and much more.
