Learning to cook is THE best thing people can do to improve their health and overall well being.
But too many kids grow up not knowing how to cook and have no idea where to start. Even as adults, the process seems like too much work, its too daunting, too complicated, and too expensive.
Cooking food that is good and good for you should be simple, approachable, accessible, and FUN. We have an enormous opportunity to impact lifelong health and wellness by developing healthy eating habits, particularly in under served populations, simply by teaching kids to cook, giving them life skills they need to eat well and stay healthy.
No Kitchen Required!
There is an immediate correlation between childhood poverty/food insecurity and unhealthy eating habits, poor health outcomes and social stigma as adults,
The Good Food Project is dedicated to addressing these issues and improving kids lives by bringing interactive, hands-on cooking classes to the kids. We specialize in cooking in unconventional venues – school classrooms, the library, rec centers, Boys & Girls Clubs, your basement – wherever kids are hungry and hungry to learn.
Our classes are completely portable and we bring everything needed to prep, cook, eat and clean up to each location. We teach kids to cook during and after school, on school breaks, in the evenings and on weekends. We never want cost to be a barrier to learning to cook, so our classes are free for kids to attend.
The Good Food Project is designed to develop a love of cooking and an appreciation for healthy, delicious food, so our classes include pancakes, soups & salads, sauteing, stir fry, pasta, omelets and more. Each class covers knife skills, sanitation, food prep, kitchen safety and focuses on one essential cooking skill, with ways to use and adapt it to any recipe. Kids learn about, cook and eat their creations, and take home recipes to make them again.
Additionally, our classes are focused in areas known as food deserts - urban neighborhoods that are many miles from the nearest grocery store, served by inconsistent bus routes and where the primary food shopping is done at 7-11. We are changing these kids' lives by teaching them how to access, cook and enjoy real, fresh, healthy food.
Our Team
The Good Food Project was founded by Chelly Klann in July, 2017. With 8+ years working in the culinary world and teaching cooking classes, she has seen how excited kids are about cooking and how much they enjoy the experience of creating something delicious. She brought several local chefs together, creating The Good Food Project to show kids that cooking healthy, nutritious food can be easy, tasty and fun.
