I met Michele during a recent trip to Milan. He was sitting on a park bench close to me when we started making conversation and he told me a bit about his story, which I got to understand more about after returning to talk to him the next day with a friend who speaks Italian.
Michele is Italian from Milan and currently homeless, and had a more regular life until three years ago, having worked as a graphic designer for publicity and later in construction, until he lost the use of a part of his right hand. He has been living on the streets for three years now, near to the area where he once had a house – Porta Ticinese area in Milan.
His story drew our attention because two days prior to our encounter he was attacked in the street by drunken guys who stole his phone, his only pricey belonging, and hurt him in the process. His back ribs are fractured, and although he got recovered in the hospital, he is still in need of rest and medicines for pain.
We want to compensate on the cruelty these people have had on him by helping him get along and have more hope and opportunity to rebuild his life. He is a kind person who is eager to work and be able to afford a house for himself, but the governmental structures he has gone to have not provided him of much help. Apart from his hand disability and the temporary injury of his rib, he is in good health and free of drug addictions, for which we feel he has a good chance of turning his life around with the help of all of us.
All money raised will go to his medical bills initially and personal hygiene and food items, and later for clothing and assistance to find and keep a job as soon as possible. A monthly rent is roughly 600 euro, and we will make sure the money is strategically spent to help him step by step and not stolen or misused.
Of course, anyone who would like to come talk to him or bring any food or clothing items is well welcome, as is especially any kind of work opportunities or advice!
I pray and wish from the bottom of my heart that we can unite as a human species and help one of our kind in dire need!
Many thanks from Timothy, Daniela and Michele!
