Think back to your high school maths class - did you ever wonder how maths was relevant or when you would ever use it?
For many of us, we were bored, frustrated and didn’t know why we had to learn it.
Why does this matter? Well, in only ten years time, 80% of jobs will need technology and maths skills and right now many students are disengaged with maths.
Machinam is out to revolutionise maths in schools by making it engaging and relevant to real life. Our resources use app based technology to:
- Enable students to connect what they are learning in class to their real life
- Present a range of future career pathways
- Create an interactive classroom experience
How will we make this happen?
- Develop sample chapter for year 9 maths with teachers
- Trial the chapter in Brisbane schools and Sydney tutoring groups in Term 4, 2014
- Get feedback from students and teachers
- Finalise design and tech of app for sample chapter
- Create the remaining chapters for the year 9 resource.
Why do we care about maths? Why us?
Jillian and Felicity have been working since 2012 to inspire girls and regional students about engineering by running one day workshops with year 9 and 10 high school students across Australia. They have spoken to 1,795 students during 23 practical, hands on
events to show students how they can change the world through engineering www.powerofengineering.org
From the general lack of understanding about engineering and maths careers encountered, we saw a huge need to further engage students and make an even bigger impact. Claire suggested getting into the classroom through resources – textbooks.
