Myanmar, also known as Burma, is one of the poorest countries in Southeast Asia. Its economy, already reeling from COVID-19 restrictions, is in far more pain as the military seized control of the country in February 2021.
The American Nursing Institute – Myanmar (ANI-M) came to exist as a result of the partnership between Global Health Services Network and the Upper Myanmar Private Hospital Association (MPHA). ANI-M mission is to prepare healthcare professionals in Myanmar for global practice, based on the belief that an educated workforce and respectful work environment means high-quality patient care and healthier local Myanmar communities. Since 2015, ANI-M has been offering professional education seminars, programs for health professionals, and certificates for the healthcare industry. Unfortunately, we had to pause our operations.
In Myanmar, Military leaders’ initially restrained their response to the first waves of protests; however civil disobedience and general strikes have grown more forceful over time, escalating into a brutal effort to put down the movement that has so far left thousands injured and more than 750 dead. Many of those killed have been young protesters, including women and children.
The economic and social disruption caused by the pandemic and the military regime is devastating. Myanmar is currently experiencing regular internet shutdowns, limited bank operations and cash shortage, rise in unemployment rate, lack of access to health care services and education, and increased food insecurity.
In view of this situation, we are fundraising to provide support for loss of income of our former Myanmar staff.
