On May 30, 2013, at Moin, Jairo Mora Sandoval a conservationist, protector of sea turtles, was killed while patrolling Moin beach.
Thereafter, volunteering associated with the cause has diminished to the point of being non-existent in the area, while illegal activity increases. That is why the patrols in the area has become a very important factor to ensure sustained
monitoring activity during this season 2015.
Many professionals in biology and other researchers have expressed their concern in recent years by the significant reduction in the count of turtles on these beaches.
Traditionally there has been in the area a kind of unwritten law within which person reached the nests first gets to keep it.
This has evolved to the consolidation of a sort of informal policy that reduces conservation to a game of numbers, where the increased presence of volunteers
(more effective patrols) will reflect to be the more saved nest.
The initiative's main objective is to protect the population of marine turtles that nest in Moin; While documenting the environmental impacts caused by the construction of the new port by APM Terminals, which construction started February
16, 2015 destroying a nesting part of Moin beach affecting the spawning site for the sea turtles the marine ground and the wetland Cariari, damaging the habitat of Manatee recently appointed as the national symbol.
Our work will protect the population of turtles nesting , limiting our actions to all environmental laws protecting wildlife, specifically the Law on Protection,
Conservation and Recovery of sea turtle populations.
