We want to travel 8,000 miles, and we are starting from Vancouver, BC. 8,000 miles is a trip from Seattle all the way to New Hampshire, down to southern California, and back to British Columbia, covering every growing climate and type of farm possible. Each mile costs $0.50, and while we already have some money in our fuel fund, we currently don't have enough to go 8,000 miles.
$1000 is a gift of 1500 miles. We would be able to go as far east as North Dakota, then down to southern California before heading home. This is not as far as we wanted to go, but without this $1000 we aren't going to be going anywhere.
For every $100 donated, we can go 200 miles more. Why is it important for us to go farther? While we could find a few more vegetable farms in a small area, the real beauty of the book is the diversity of areas and types of farms. Each climate is home to different types of agriculture: dairy farms of Wisconsin, beef in the plains, vegetables in the south, fiber in the mountains, fruit in California. These farms are all separated by distance.
$1500 is a gift of 3000 miles. We would be able to go as far east as Wisconsin, then back through Denver to southern California before heading home.
$3000 is a gift of 6000 miles and allows us to do the full trip - all the way to New Hampshire, through Virginia, Colorado, and Arizona to southern California and back up to Seattle.
