Introduction:
Western Sydney is young and multicultural, but this is not represented in the media. Much of the mainstream media focuses on the negative aspects of the area and the people that reside in the western suburbs.
We want to change that. We want to project posititve images of a young a multicultural Western Sydney. We want to give young film makers a change to showcase their talents to a broad audience.
This project aims to be a launch pad for the artistic careers for a number of young people in Western Sydney of refugee backgrounds. The young people that have worked to make these films possible know that a career in the arts requires the development of
personal networks and steady campaigning. It is through the coordination of an opening night spectacular these young people aim raise their profile and that of young migrants all within the community working towards more vibrant and diverse representations
of refugees in film and in the media.
As we are seeking to raise the profile of young and upcoming artists in the community, all performers at the event will be drawn from the local community. We will also be supporting a local young person from a refugee background to DJ at the event.
This project will:
***Develop the skills of young migrants and refugees in Western Sydney.
***Support willing and dedicated individuals to build on their enthusiasm and transform that grit into concrete outcomes in the arts scene.
***Harness the zeal that is emerging from the young people within newly arrived communities, not only to create meaningful opportunities for these individuals, but also highlight pathways that others might follow.
Not only is the project innovative but so too are the perspectives and interpretations of these young people. Their experiences are unique but also wholly relevant to an increasingly changing Australian social landscape. As a result it is essential that
projects such as this film launch are supported, as they empower young people to be proactive in the attainment of their goals.
Film Details:
Taken during the filming of "Restoring Hope" 2015
“Restoring Hope” is a film that focuses on one man’s struggle to return meaning to his life after he has lost everything.
Harrison is successful and happy. He leads a humble but picturesque life with his wife and son in a small Australian town. He teaches at the local high school and is well liked by students and teachers. Harrison works hard to inspire his students to achieve
their goals, working with each young person at an individual level in order to help them be the best that they can be. He has attained great success with helping some young people turn their lives around. Helping them through the difficulties that come with
adolescents and coming of age. His family and his work meant everything to him, until it was violently taken from him on one horrific day.
After the accident Harrison had nothing to live for. He was lost, floating in sea of depression and hatred. Nothing could pull him from the depths of his despair. Until one day…
