Real Industry Job Interviews (RIJI) helps students (15- 19 years old) learn skills to look for and apply for a job with support from our local business and community organisations.
We want to run the RIJI program in Melbourne’s Inner North Cities of Darebin, Moreland and Yarra.
Please help young people start their career journey. After all we all started our journey somewhere and with help from someone.
Why should you help?
We are asking you to make a conscious decision to help and support the young people in our community gain employment
Youth unemployment (aged between 15-19 years old) is currently very high, ranging from 13% and up to more than 20% in parts of our community, in some parts of the community is 4 times higher than the national unemployment rate.
You can make a real difference by helping in the early stages of a young person’s life.
Inner Northern Local Learning and Employment Network (INLLEN) is a not for profit community organisation creating and implementing strategies to support young people across Darebin, Moreland and Yarra by brokering partnerships with organisations, business and
schools.
INLLEN is working to deliver the highly commended Real Industry Job Interviews (RIJI) program in 2014. The aim of RIJI is to build community capacity to assist all school-aged young people in our community, including those most at risk of not gaining successful
employment.
The RIJI program has been offered to schools for the past four years, in 2012 the INLLEN formed a Steering Committee to strengthen collaboration between schools, industry and community organisations to support financial and operational sustainability to
ensure all students have access to this program in Darebin, Moreland and Yarra.
Almost 90 % of young people who have participated in RIJI in the past have indicated that
the program was valuable in helping them build their skills and self confidence when searching and applying for a job.
The vision of the program is for all Year 10 students in the Inner North to participate in a work readiness program. The aim of the program is to empower young people by equipping them with job searching, resume writing and interviewing skills that will
lead them to future employment.
The program has the capacity for over 600 young people from 22 schools and community education organisations to participate from the Darebin, Moreland and Yarra regions.
More than 80 local business and community representative each year volunteer their time to interview young people.
This program provides a unique opportunity to link youth directly with local business and industry and potential employment and meaningful work experience opportunities.
What are the benefits?
- Young people will improve their chances of employment by developing their skills and knowledge.
- Create connections between schools and local business/ industry.
- Develop teachers knowledge of the local labour market and current work readiness model.
- Local business and community members are able to connect with young people and share their knowledge and experiences on how to best present themselves on paper and at interview
A number of interviewers that participated in previous RIJI programs commentated:
“I wish this type of program was available when I was going to school, I certainly would have benefited from it”
Young people last year made the following comments:
“I was nervous because it looked like a serious interview but at the same time I was excited because I was looking for a job and this interview was going to help me.”
“What I really enjoyed the most about the program was that we all got to go dressed up like we were going on a real interview and experience what a real interview is about.”
"The RIJI program has helped me to begin to take on a more active role in shaping my own future through subject selection, plans for further study, work experience and a more independent approach to both my studies and finances".

Your pledge of financial support will ensure the sustainability of this program, enabling all young people in our community, particularly those at risk of not gaining successful employment, to achieve the skills they need to successfully enter the workforce.
Youth unemployment (aged between 15-19 years old) is currently very high, ranging from 13% and up to more than 20% in parts of our community, in some parts of the community is 4 times higher than the national unemployment rate.
RIJI is an early prevention program, providing school students with key information, skills and most importantly confidence to take on the job market.
The RIJI program demonstrates a great community effort in preparing our young people for their transition to employment.
You can make a real difference by helping in the early stages of a young person’s life by also getting your friends, work colleagues or other local businesses involved.
