"Yoga Teacher Training has helped me with my daily life on the inside and I plan to use it on the outside when I leave. Show others what I learned- how to deal with stress or just how to maintain a healthy life." - YTT Graduate
Yoga Teacher Training at State Correctional Phoenix
Support men who are incarcerated at State Correctional Phoenix in Pennsylvania. Help us fund our 6 month Yoga Teacher Training. After 200 hours of study, the men can teach trauma sensitive yoga to their peers.
Our Trauma Sensitive Yoga Teacher Trainings (YTT) offered in correctional facilities are so much more than just yoga trainings. They are transformational. We teach individuals who are incarcerated mindful yoga tools and techniques that help them, personally, center and heal. This has a direct, positive impact on the trainees' personal physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. YTT is also an opportunity to build a pathway for the participants to contribute to their communities, both on the inside and outside. They are able to effect the wellbeing of their communities, too, because when they graduate they are equipped to share these practices with their peers.
This creates a ripple effect in which the graduates of our YTT program are able to access people and places within the correctional system that we, as outsiders, cannot reach. It provides sustainability way beyond our organization capacity. Graduates of our previous program are currently teaching in mental health units, restricted units, and other areas where our non-incarcerated instructors cannot go. We've seen immense success from previous trainings: two graduates are now supporting change and healing in their communities after being released; three graduates have been relocated to other institutions and have started brand new yoga programs on their own.
"The violence of prison is easy. The mental warfare is hard. Yoga and Meditation has TRANSFORMED me for the better. Yoga helps me think of healthier and more creative ways to think." - YTT Graduate
Our Vision
At TYP we recognize that people are more than where they are, what they’ve been through or are going through, more than a label. We recognize the boundless capacity for growth, transformation, healing, connection, and resilience that every person holds within, and that this capacity is not tarnished or diminished by a person’s circumstances, or the difficult situations they might be facing.
