More than ever, youth require the skills to collaborate with others from a diverse backgrounds and cultures. Intercultural understanding and the ability to work seamlessly with others who are culturally and linguistically different to ourselves is an essential skill in the 21st century.
Young people benefit from having the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to their society. This can provide them with a sense of empowerment – “I can make a difference”, and nurture within them a sense of responsibility for the state of the world around them – “It is important for me to contribute to the improvement of the world around me”.
Expand will provide real-life opportunities to enhance these skills. The host community is Warangoi High School located 40 minutes from Kokopo, Rabaul. The school is excited to work with the Youth Without Borders project. The youth mentors and students who are developing the project want to fundraise the entire project to ensure both Australia and Papua New Guinea are benefiting from the project. Any tiny bit of help you can provide to help us reach our fundraising goal will help us build a sustainable project in Rabaul.
The project team consists of a project coordinator, five youth mentors and three advisors with diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. They are aged between 20-28, with many having personal connections to Papua New Guinea and experience in project management, non-for-profits and mentoring. These mentors will be working with Brisbane youth and the host community on a collaborative and mutually beneficial project which will encourage leadership, project development skills and knowledge of culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
From all of us at Youth Without Borders, we thank you for supporting Expand.
