The Future We Are Creating:
We want to see a world where young students are given an equal opportunity to be physically healthy and financially sufficient. Financial literacy is a great way to provide these students with the basics to understanding
the world that they live in so that they can contribute to their community as capable and knowledgeable young citizens.
How We Are Creating It:
It’s no secret that talking about personal finance can sometimes be a dry topic. As advocates for financial literacy we want to create an environment where learning about this subject is fun and engaging for students.
Our solution is our financial education-based youth basketball camp that will be free to low income youth in Los Angeles.
We have a head instructor who is on the coaching staff of a prominent Los Angeles college team. He brings with him connections to well-known college players and a few corporate sponsors. We hope that the opportunity to
learn basketball skills with experienced coaches will draw students to join the camp while we take this chance to engage them and teach important life lessons that will protect them in the financial world.
The camp will be held for 2 days in August for 6 hours each day. The students will have a lot of fun and the coaches will keep them engaged with basketball training, guest speakers and literacy lessons. They will learn
the basics of banking, how to use a credit properly and the difference between wants and needs. A rewards ceremony will also take place at the end of the camp to reward both the best students in the classroom and the best players on the basketball court.
Our Story and Why You Should Support Us:
Since 2010, our organization has worked to bring financial literacy curriculum to low-income communities where schools are not informed about the many different financial literacy materials that are available to them.
Financial education has come to the forefront of educational reform, but many states still do not mandate this kind of curriculum. It is up to individuals and organizations that are passionate about the issue to continue advocating literacy. Our group of 6
is a passionate bunch, and when we set our minds to something we get the job done! We believe our work is imperative and our basketball camp proposal is the first of its kind that serves this purpose. Hopefully this camp will be the first of many to come!
