CleanBirth.org works to make birth safer in Laos, which has among the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in the world.

More than 80% of the women we serve give birth at home or in the jungle. The women explain why:
“I can’t take the time from my family to make the days' journey to the clinic.”
“My husband won’t let me.”
“It’s our tradition [to birth in the jungle].”
“We don’t have the money [for transport or clinic fees].”
“The roads are washed out in rainy season.”
“The nurses don’t have supplies or experience.”
Instead of going to clinics, birthing women stay in their villages. Some have the help of a family member or village birth attendant, others birth totally alone.

In order to make birth safer, in 2012 CleanBirth.org partnered with
ACD, a Lao non-profit, to provide
Clean Birth Kits, which are shown to prevent infection.

From 2012-14: 4,000 birth kits provided, no cases of infection reported.

Further, we invest in
training nurses. Nurses learn how to talk effectively to mothers about using the Clean Birth Kits and the importance of having a birth helper.
In 2014 alone, we trained 88 nurses, local staff & volunteers.

Through an exciting partnership with the
Yale School of Nursing we are expanding the training we offer nurses. In July 2014, Yale midwives taught Lao nurses the
WHO’s Essentials of Newborn Care.

In March 2015, CleanBirth.org and Yale midwives will return to provide additional training, in response to the nurses requests for more information.

Please donate to enable these trainings and the continued supply of Clean Birth Kits.
