The issue:
Kibera is Africa’s second biggest slum, with an estimated population of 700,000. Crime rates and drug usage are high, largely due to the lack of employment opportunities and living standards. Much of the food available is imported and often more expensive than families can afford.
Our Mission:
Green Card’s mission is to create a green, child friendly, community space. This provides sanctuary from the often poor conditions of Kibera, as well as providing a place for workshops, community events and entrepreneurship. Thus far, Green Card have already set up a library, a football ground and soccer club, a cyber cafe, a community hall, children’s schooling sponsorship program and women’s groups.
The solution:
Now we wish to use this space to grow food for the Kibera community while generating local jobs and agricultural training. We have already constructed four greenhouses. We believe that in full operation, the greenhouses can create up to 10 new jobs, while providing fresh, hyper-local and affordable vegetables.
We will grow:
- Tomatoes
- Cabbage
- Sukuma Wiki (local kale)
We believe that growing food locally not only improves food security and creates local jobs but benefits the social fabric and community involvement - both extremely important in the fight against crime, drug abuse and mental health issues.
This is where you come in:
While we have already built the greenhouse structures themselves, we need further funding to purchase the soil, irrigation equipment, fertilisers, seeds and other growing equipment. To do so, we need your support.
We are considering two options depending on the funding we are able to achieve.
- Base Goal: A traditional soil based system using gravity fed drip irrigation. This is the cheapest option coming in at $USD 3000.
- Stretch Goal: A hydroponic system using a recovery drip method. This will drastically reduce water usage as well as increase yields and quality. We have a quote at $USD 6000
Please help us achieve our goal and make one more step in our mission of empowering the people of Kibera.
