[Mom]ent to learn
Young women are the primary group most affected by poverty in Nepal. Plagued by patriarchal poor societies,
women are often forgotten, abused, raped and used as a commodity for forced labor and prostitution. In search of work and some form of income, women find themselves tricked by promises of food, education or security. They are
targets of the human trafficking trade in India. 60-70% of all women are victimes of violence.
Our project is to establish a 6 month long program in which over
200 women will begin learning how to read and write. As a result, close to
1,000 children and other relatives will benefit. Why?
Education is the key to receiving an income, and therefore helping support a family and keep children in school.
By increasing their level of independency and decreasing their vulnerability, literacy will allow women to gain autonomy in their daily life, such as being able to read and understand documents they sign.
When a mother is given an education, she gains access to needed tools to lead a healthier and more financially stable life for her family.
By providing a mother with the tools needed, we can break the cycle of stagnant poverty and exploitation.
Planète Enfants aims to strengthen the capacity of mothers’ actions through:
* literacy classes
* activities on Women’s Rights, Trafficking in Person, Gender Based Violence
* savings groups that help women start sustainable businesses
* creating protection committees (the Nepalese women will meet together and promote trafficking awareness, as well as Women’s Rights awareness)
* health and law workshops.
Women Cooperatives help us to identify beneficiaries. Then we select them based on the following criteria:
* individual motivation
* low level of education
* economic and social vulnerability
Where will this project take place?
* Bara and Makwampur districts of Nepal
* This area was chosen due to community requests
What are the risks and challenges to this project?
The women may not attend classes either because of their tasks, or because of the refusal of their husbands. To cope with this risk it is necessary to highly motivate them, therefore the beneficiaries participate in the selection
of teachers,training topics and activities.
A little math…
Estimated number of women/girls directly affected: 210, because we will have 10 female teachers and 200 female students
Estimated number of people indirectly affected: 1,000, because this number is representative the females’ family members (200 x 5)
We will establish 10 classes total.
