HOW THE IDEA WAS BORN
According to the UN Refugee Agency, 1 in every 113 people in the world is an asylum seeker, displaced or refugee. The global report highlighted that an average of 24 people per minute were forced to leave their homes and find asylum in other regions, inside or outside their country. In 2015, about 12.4 million people became displaced because of the conflicts in their country or due to prosecution. Among them, 8 million are displaced people inside their borders and 1.8 million are refugees.
WHO ARE WE
We are two volunteers participating in European Volunteer Service in Bulgaria: Omar Quesada from Spain and Giulia Bellotto from Italy. At the end of this project, in July 2017, we should take a flight back home. Instead, we have decided to make a trip through Europe, visiting some of the main refugee camps along the way, as a protest for all of those who cannot go back home or anywhere else. It may seem a long way, but at least we can afford to do it and we have a home to go back to, while there are so many people who cannot.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
While visiting the refugee camps, we will film short documentaries, thus bringing to people the hidden stories of the human beings behind the numbers. Each chapter will focus on a specific topic, aiming not to talk about the conditions at the refugee camps, but rather about the people themselves, their stories, their memories, their dreams, and everything that they have left on the way behind.
Our journey will start in the city where we live right now – Sofia (Bulgaria). Here we will films some teaser videos during the months leading up to our trip. Then, in July, we will travel to Thessaloniki (Greece), Belgrade (Serbia), Padua and Lampedusa (Italy).
We will film, edit and upload online one short documentary after every visit to the camps. We will spend about 26 days traveling, filming, editing and uploading chapters, regularly updating our followers, so that they all could travel with us and help the cause. It may also can become a feature documentary after the trip, and we could distribute it along some international festivals and reach a wider audience.
Every follower an user can become a benefactor just by watching, just by sharing and following us. We live in a viral world, a world of shares and retweets, and we want to use this in our favour in order to raise awareness and to help the refugee cause. We are willing to work on this project, so that everybody could help from their homes. After this, we hope to keep going with more projects, involving more organizations and people, hoping that maybe, one day, all the displaced people we’re trying to help will be able to start a new way ahead.
